The story could have been very beautiful. Arriving on the bench of Borussia Dortmund as head coach 4 years ago now (he was assistant from 2018 to 2020), Edin Terzic has experienced almost everything with his club. Last season already, he had a turbulent season with a huge failure at the finish. While his team was leading the Bundesliga on the last day and only needed a draw against Mainz (who no longer played anything), Dortmund managed to miss out by losing the title to the benefit of Bayern Munich.
Disillusionment too much for BVB supporters who had demanded the departure in the wake of Edin Terzic. But the German technician was finally reinforced by his management for a new season while his contract expired in June 2025. The opportunity for him to catch up with a squad that he knew perfectly even if orphan of Jude Bellingham who left for Real Madrid . But this season, the mayonnaise has not gone well with the Ruhr club. Far from there. And finally, the BVB’s year was saved by the historic run in the Champions League and this final lost to Real Madrid (the BVB had notably eliminated PSG in the semi-finals).
Edin Terzic did not want to continue
Nothing to hide the disappointing season in the Bundesliga (with this 5th place, far from the podium and even further from the title). Then the question of Edin Terzic’s future arose. In the German press, we even mentioned the fact that certain executives had called for his departure (notably Mats Hummels). This Thursday, everything accelerated. The former West Ham assistant coach had decided to resign and a meeting took place with his management. Both parties finally came to an agreement and BVB decided to accept this decision. The club made the news official in a press release.
“Edin Terzić leaves Borussia Dortmund. The coach, who won the DFB Cup with BVB in 2021, finished runner-up in 2023 and reached the Champions League final in 2024, has asked BVB to terminate his contract with immediate effect. Borussia Dortmund accepted this request after a joint discussion., we can read in the club press release. Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke also reacted: ““Edin Terzic has done an exceptional job at BVB. We all owe him a huge debt of gratitude. Edin and I will always be friends.” Terzic therefore leaves Borussia Dortmund after 6 years at the club. BVB will therefore have to find a replacement for him and joins the large list of European teams looking for a new coach this summer…
