He is undoubtedly one of the great architects of the magnificent comeback of Olympique Lyonnais this season. While he seemed in great difficulty at the start of the season, like his partners, including his captain Alexandre Lacazette, Maxence Caqueret (24 years old) greatly raised his level of play and established himself as the leader of the middle of Lyon, where he was the only one to start all of the Ligue 1 matches this season. Performances which were logically followed by the major European clubs.
Because the midfielder trained at OL is reaching a turning point in his career. Extended to the summer of 2022 and now under contract until 2027, the native of Vénissieux has just finished his sixth season with OL and is not yet certain of staying. “I exceeded 150 matches during the first Coupe de France match, in 2024. It is a source of pride to have played so many matches with the club. I want to continue playing, because that’s what I want, to play and win above all”he explained last April, without specifying whether it would be with OL or elsewhere.
Maxence Caqueret not sure of staying at OL
According to information from Parisian, Maxence Caqueret’s performances interested the popular team for the 2023-24 season: Bayer Leverkusen. The team which managed to win the Bundesliga – as well as the German Cup – while remaining undefeated would have taken very specific information on the Lyonnais’ situation. Xabi Alonso’s team has not yet raised the subject with OL, but the first exchanges could take place soon with the sixth in Ligue 1.
For his part, Maxence Caqueret could be attracted by the Bundesliga and the Bayer Leverkusen project, which will compete in the 2024-25 Champions League with a certain status after his excellent season. OL would have valued their midfielder at around 20 million euros, while his future remains uncertain with Les Gones. It remains to be seen what the position of the club will be, which could perhaps give him the captain’s armband next year with the probable departures of Alexandre Lacazette, Corentin Tolisso and Anthony Lopes.
