Prime Minister of the United Kingdom since October 2022 and Leader of the Conservative Party, Rishi Sunak aims to bring national service back across the Channel. Wanting to launch a pilot project in 2025 before rolling it out across the country by 2029, it would be mandatory and offer two options to 18-year-olds. Either enlist for 12 months in the army or spend one weekend a month volunteering as reported The Telegraph.

A measure which will have an impact on football and in particular young players from English clubs (Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish too). No one will be exempt and they will either have to put their career on hold for a year or find arrangements to reconcile volunteer-type civic engagement with their sporting activity.
