The Greek club Olympiakos won its first European trophy by beating Fiorentina in the final of the Europa Conference League.
Olympiakos Piraeus is in heaven! The Greek club won its very first European Cup by beating Fiorentina in the C4 final. A success which took a long time to emerge since it was only in overtime that the Greeks won the bet.
It was Moroccan international Ayoub El Kaabi who took on the hero’s costume. The top scorer in this competition (11 goals in 9 matches) hit the mark at 116e minute by placing a victorious header on a perfect cross from the Argentinian Santiago Hezze.
Al Kaabi delivers Olympiakos
The Athenian public held their breath as VAR was used on this action. Finally, the achievement was validated, freeing the Olympiakos players and all their supporters.
Even if it was late, the victory of Mendilibar’s team is well deserved. The locals were the most dangerous throughout the match. They could have made the difference much earlier in the game, notably through Iborra and Jovetic. On the Italian side, we were a little less threatening. In 1e period, there were discreet attempts by Bonaventura. And in overtime, only the Frenchman Jonathan Ikoné managed to endanger the opposing goalkeeper.
Fiorentina is cursed
For the Viola, the blow is very hard to absorb. Especially since this is the second year in a row that the Tuscans have lost in the final of this event. Last year, they fell to West Ham.
