About to close the French chapter of his career, Olivier Giroud opens up like never before in a documentary film broadcast this Sunday evening on Canal+.

It’s decided, Euro 2024 will be Olivier Giroud’s last competition with the Blues, after 13 international years at the highest level. The 37-year-old striker, top scorer in the history of the French team with 57 goals, chose to hang up the tricolor flag, he who on Saturday evening said goodbye to AC Milan before turning to the United States and Los Angeles FC.

This Sunday evening, Canal+ is broadcasting a film by David Perrier retracing the career of the 2018 world champion. A documentary which does not shy away from the behind-the-scenes and private life of the former Montpellier, down to the most intimate confessions of those close to him. By his own admission, Olivier Giroud was particularly moved by a sequence with his mother, Viviane.

The latter admits it bluntly. After giving birth to three babies – Bertrand, Romain and Bérangère – she no longer wanted to give birth. “ My whole being refused this child », she confides with disconcerting frankness. “ This is the scene that moved me the mostwhispers Olivier Giroud to the Parisian. My mother had to accept me, to fight against herself when I was not expected. I am not a psychotherapist, but there is perhaps a link to be made with my background. »

Victim of injustice according to Deschamps

Everyone who has worked with him confirms it: Olivier Giroud is capable of rare resilience, always quick to bounce back despite obstacles and hard knocks. “ He went up, he came down and then he came back up again », Notes Arsène Wenger, who coached him at Arsenal. “There have been many unfair things done to him », judges for his part the coach of the Blues Didier Deschamps, while insisting: “ Those who break records mean that they have done more than others… »

Olivier Giroud, for his part, denies nothing, and regrets nothing. So he takes on this documentary dedicated to him with humility. “ I am very proud to leave this document as a legacy to my children and my loved ones. It was important, in my eyes, to leave a mark. I also wanted to show behind the scenes. (…) We were able to collect strong emotional testimonies. »
