Rare satisfaction at the end of the season for the Canaries, Matthis Abline will not stay in Nantes. Stade Rennais has activated its buyout clause for its striker.
The summer transfer window is off to a bad start for FC Nantes. The Canaries hoped to keep Matthis Abline for next season, but it failed. The 21-year-old striker will return to Stade Rennais, the club which loaned him. According to L’Equipe, the SRFC has activated its buyout clause provided for in Abline’s loan to Nantes.
The French international hopeful was, however, one of the rare satisfactions for Nantes at the end of the season. Completely revived by the return to the bench of Antoine Kombouaré, Abline finished the championship like a cannonball, with 4 goals in 7 games, often playing in an unusual left winger position.
Will Abline stay in Rennes?
The former Carquefou player could see himself staying in Loire-Atlantique, but he knew that his future did not depend on him. FC Nantes had exercised its purchase option, set at 6 million euros, but Rennes had kept an option of 2 million euros to recover its player. This is what happened.
However, it is not certain that Matthis Abline will wear the colors of Stade Rennais next season. The player had been copiously insulted at Roazhon Park during the visit of FC Nantes at the start of the season, the supporters of the Ille-et-Vilaine club accusing him of having declared himself “proud to be from Nantes” during the video announcing his loan to Nantes.
Rennes could thus take advantage of this to sell Abline to another club this summer. But for the operation to be profitable, the amount of the transfer will have to exceed 8 million euros.
