Week after week, Bayer Leverkusen gets closer to the ultimate prestige: finishing the season undefeated. The German club is getting closer to this objective, after this big victory against Bochum (see the summary), signing a 50th match without defeat. The nickname ‘Neverkusen’ given in 2002 after the failure in the league and in the Champions League final has been swept away this season, and the invincibility record has already been broken. Bayer only has one game left (against Augsburg at home) to equal a crazy record.
Indeed, Bayer has already beaten the record of Juventus, Dinamo Zagreb, Rijeka and especially Benfica in terms of the number of matches without defeat, and could equal a new record, that of finishing the season undefeated in the league. Only three teams have managed to do this in the modern era: Milan in the 1991-1992 season, Arsenal in 2003-2004 and Juventus in 2011-2012. But none had the chance to achieve a treble with a European Cup at stake. A record that Bayern Munich, in hegemony in recent years across the Rhine, has never managed to reach. Added to obtaining a sacred potential in the Europa League, Xabi Alonso’s men are close to achieving a feat which will remain engraved in history.
