Despite a disappointing second campaign at Manchester United, winger Antony insists his £86m (€108m) price tag has not been a problem.
The Brazilian was signed by Ajax for this colossal sum during the summer 2022 transfer window. However, United have not really seen a return on their investment, with Antony struggling to adapt during of his first season, before experiencing an even more difficult period this season.
The 24-year-old only scored his first league goal of the season on Saturday against Burnley, with four games remaining, and he provided just one assist. His lack of form was heavily criticized, as was his decision to celebrate Man Utd’s FA Cup semi-final victory over Second Division side Coventry City by covering his ears in the direction of their opponents beaten.
Not a price problem
Antony, however, insists his huge transfer fee did not weigh on him during his time at Old Trafford, and that his criticism only motivates him. He told The Athletic: “It (the transfer fee) doesn’t really have an impact on me because I know my value, money is money and obviously everyone talks about it, but no one would do it if the performances of everyone and myself were on top.
Last summer, Antony was accused of domestic violence by his ex-girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin. A police investigation is still ongoing as the end of the season approaches.
