Austrian coach Ralf Rangnick has confirmed that he is a candidate to take charge of Bayern Munich next season.
“There have been contacts with Bayern Munich”, Rangnick told the Austrian site 90minuten.at, in an interview reported by German media on Wednesday. The German coach said he had informed the Austrian football federation of Bayern’s interest, but ” for the moment, there is no reason for me to deal with it intensively or specifically.”
Asked when that moment would arrive, Rangnick replied: “When Bayern say: ‘We want you’. Then I should ask myself if I really want it.” Bayern are looking for a new coach, with Thomas Tuchel set to leave the club at the end of the season.
Zidane out?
After missing out on the German league title, Bayern are in danger of experiencing their first season without a trophy since 2012. Tuchel’s team are still in contention in the Champions League, where they face Real Madrid in the semi-final. Rangnick has emerged as one of the favorites to succeed Tuchel at Bayern, who have suffered the ignominy of three high-profile rejections in recent weeks.
Xabi Alonso stayed with his Bayer Leverkusen team that beat Bayern to the German title, former Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann extended his contract with the German national team until the 2026 World Cup, then Unai Emery , another declared candidate, opted to stay at Aston Villa on Tuesday. Zinedine Zidane, still in the running, could well see himself overtaken in the end by the experienced Rangnick.
