This Tuesday evening, Chelsea once again confirmed that he had been ill for several years now. In the Premier League clash against Arsenal, the Blues were slapped (5-0) and are in 9th place in the standings. A performance which comes just a few days after the FA Cup elimination in the semi-finals against Manchester City. Since these poor performances, if certain players have been singled out like Nicolas Jackson and his clumsiness in front of goal, it is also Mauricio Pochettino who has been called into question. The former PSG coach is struggling to find the right formula despite an XXL squad and inevitably his future is put back on the table.
This Wednesday, the Telegraph reveals in fact that on the Chelsea side, we only talk about the future of Mauricio Pochettino. And for good reason, the question of whether or not he remains at the head of the team this summer clearly arises. According to the British media, if no decision has yet been made concerning the Argentine technician, the pressure is clearly increasing around him. The London management is frustrated with several of its choices, but retains a certain esteem for its work in conditions that are not easy to manage with a multitude of injuries. Within the club itself, it is believed that Mauricio Pochettino cannot be held solely responsible for the poor results.
Management still hesitates
But this opinion is not unanimous. Especially with the elimination in the FA Cup and the defeat in the Carabao Cup final, Chelsea will experience a blank season and risk not qualifying for the European Cup with a 9th place in the Premier League. This will not necessarily work in Mauricio Pochettino’s favor as a meeting to take stock is already planned with Todd Boehly, as well as sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart. The Telegraph explains that some club leaders are campaigning to keep Pochettino, believing on the one hand that no side coach would come to such an unstable club, and on the other hand, precisely, that stability after having changed coaches three times in 2 seasons, would not hurt Chelsea.
The British media also adds that part of the club’s American management would like a change while Europe was the minimum objective for the first season, especially as supporters begin to attack Pochettino after recent results. But in his defense, the former Tottenham coach can boast of having the players with him since several players, internally, have expressed their desire to continue the adventure with their current coach. The latter is very appreciated by the group, particularly for his ability to help young people like Cole Palmer, Malo Gusto and Nicolas Jackson progress. His knowledge of the players will also be useful this summer as Todd Boehly is still preparing for a big transfer window (and parting ways with several players).
