PSG 2024 compared to OM in 93

Luis Enrique’s PSG does not have the best team in the club’s history on paper. And yet, this could well win the Champions League.

Two years before winning the Champions League in 1993, Olympique de Marseille failed in the final of the European Champion Clubs’ Cup in Bari. However, the Marseille club very probably had a better team on paper in 1991. Paris Saint-Germain finds itself in a somewhat identical position today.

“The last few seasons, PSG has top players. Then he lost Neymar and Messi, but he can create a surprise and surprise the whole football world.”, remarked Marcel Desailly, on the sidelines of the Laureus trophies. In 1992, OM lost important players, such as Jean-Pierre Papin, Carlos Mozer and Chris Waddle.

PSG, forever second?

“It makes me think of the Marseille of my time. We won the first Champions League in French football when no one expected it. There had been a real drop in quality in terms of players. And suddenly we did it,” remembered the one who lifted the Champions League with Marseille in 1993, then with AC Milan in 1994.

If PSG ever lifts the “Big Ears Cup” on June 1 at Wembley, it will be the second French football club in history to win this competition. In 1996, the Rouge et Bleu won another European Cup, the now-defunct Cup Winners’ Cup.
