The first woman to direct a World Cup match, Stéphanie Frappart was not chosen among the 18 referees who will officiate at Euro 2024. Clément Turpin and François Letexier are the ones elected on the French side.
Stéphanie Frappart is a pioneer of women’s refereeing, who has broken many ground. But after being named for the 2022 World Cup, where she became the first woman to officiate in this competition, the Francilienne will not continue this summer during the Euro.
UEFA formalized this Tuesday the list of 18 referees selected for the competition, and we find in particular Szymon Marciniak (Poland), the referee of the 2022 World Cup final, or even some well-known whistles who have crossed paths with French clubs this season in the Champions League and Europa League, such as Istvan Kovacs (Romania) and Michael Oliver (England).
Turpin and Letexier go to the Euro
On the French side, the two referees chosen are Clément Turpin and François Letexier. This is no surprise, given the nominations made by UEFA this season during the European Cups. Mr. Turpin is a regular on the continental scene, and he has been to all major international competitions since Euro 2016. For Mr. Letexier, this is a great first. But the Breton has a good rating with UEFA, if we judge by his appointment for the Real Madrid-Manchester City clash in the Champions League recently.
Messrs. Letexier and Turpin will be accompanied to Germany by their usual assistants. Jérôme Brisard and Willy Delajod are also appointed to be in charge of VAR.
