Premier League: Liverpool scuttles against Manchester United and loses precious points

Published:

The race for the Premier League title is crazy, completely crazy. And this meeting between Liverpool and Manchester United illustrated it again very well. At kick-off, the Reds, away, were second in the standings, one point behind Arsenal (71 pts) leader and the same number of points as Manchester City (70 pts) third. And with the victory of the other two competitors, Liverpool absolutely had to win to regain the lead and remain in a position of strength. Opposite was a sad Manchester United team which remained on 1 victory in its last 4 league matches. And for the occasion, in this shock, we found teams with good names on paper. On the Liverpool side, Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez led the attack.

Jürgen Klopp's three men were putting the Mancunian defense through an ordeal. For 45 minutes, Liverpool suffocated a Manchester United team in agony and which rode the waves without being able to stop them. Logically, André Onana conceded a first goal signed Luis Diaz alone in the area after a corner. But the Cameroonian goalkeeper made 5 saves in the first half. On his bench, Erik ten Hag could not find the solution. Liverpool could well have led 3-0 at the break (15 shots in 45 minutes) while Manchester United had not even attempted a single shot in the first act. Worse still, no Mancunian player had managed to get even remotely close to Caoimhin Kelleher's cage.

A dumpling that changes everything

We were therefore heading towards a new performance perfectly managed by the Reds, especially since Manchester United did not seem at all able to reverse the trend. But, football is not an exact science and sometimes nothing is needed to revive a team. While we started on the same basis in this match, young defender Jarell Quansah was guilty of a huge mistake. There was the slip in the axis of Steven Gerrard in 2014, there will now be the missed pass in the axis of the young 21-year-old defender. Bruno Fernandes didn't ask for much to try from the central circle while Kelleher was logically advanced. Thus, the Portuguese found the target and therefore equalized on the very first shot attempted by his team (1-1, 51st). A terrible scenario for Liverpool who had complete doubts after that and relaunched Manchester United which had not existed until then. The worst scenario therefore while every point is precious in this fierce race for the title.

Worse still, Liverpool conceded a second goal. The young Mancunian talent Kobbie Mainoo sent a marvelous shot into the top corner (63rd) to knock out Jürgen Klopp's team. A strike which came out of nowhere and which made the German technician come out of his gongs. In a crazy end to the match, Liverpool gave everything to equalize, without success. Mohamed Salah missed a few chances just like Darwin Nunez. We had to wait for a poorly adjusted tackle from Wan-Bissaka on Eliott to see Salah equalize from the penalty spot (2-2, 85th). Enough to offer thrilling last minutes. But ultimately, there will be no new twists and turns. Liverpool are scuttling on their own and losing two very important points in the title race. Considering the scenario, the equalizer was perhaps unexpected. Manchester United are still not winning on their side. Arsenal is therefore the new leader of the English championship.
