The Chelsea side have been tipped to sign two Real Madrid midfield legends to bolster their squad, as the Blues continue to struggle under Mauricio Pochettino.
Since new owner Todd Boehly took over in the summer of 2022, the London club have been one of the biggest spenders in football, but this massive spending has not translated into results on the pitch. After a disappointing 2022-23 season which saw the sacking of Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter, Pochettino now finds himself at the helm of a Chelsea side that is languishing in 11th place in the Premier League. Boehly now risks seeing his side finish outside European qualifying for the second season in a row and could well make further radical changes this summer. A daring double operation at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium could finally turn things around, according to former Blues star Joe Cole.
Two veterans on deck?
“ Does Luka Modric want to come and play in the Premier League for one more year? » Cole asked during an interview with TalkSport. “He is still doing things at Real Madrid. How much did he help (Eduardo) Camavinga, (Aurélien) Tchouameni, (Federico) Valverde? He would have had such an influence on them as players. Toni Kroos is 34 years old, but does he want to test himself at his age, by coming here and helping this young team? »
Modric and Kroos have been two of the cornerstones of Madrid's success over the past decade. Since their first meeting at the Bernabeu in 2014, the pair have won four Champions Leagues and three Champions Leagues, and could add to that tally this year, with the Whites still competitive in both competitions. Even at 38 and 34 years old, their talent and experience would be a considerable asset for Chelsea, who are looking to get back on track, but it is not certain that Madrid are ready to sell two of their idols in the same summer.
