OM were very scared

OM missed out on their match on the Villarreal pitch this Thursday in the round of 16 second leg of the Europa League (3-0). But the Marseillais are indeed in the quarter-finals.

In 2017, the Marseillais were able to have fun with the scenario of the famous fatal comeback at PSG against FC Barcelona (4-0 victory in the first leg, 6-1 defeat in the return). This Thursday, fate almost played a funny trick on them… Winners of Villarreal 4-0 at the Vélodrome in the round of 16 first leg of the Europa League, the Phocaeans trembled until the end this Thursday in Spain.

The crazy scenario has indeed taken shape at the Ceramica stadium, launched by Coquelin who, however, waited until the half hour of play to plant the first Iberian banderilla with a pretty header (1-0, 32e). Trailing 1-0 at the break, OM could still see it coming, and yet the Olympians did everything to complicate their task…

Clauss, relief

Aubameyang and Harit dropped in the bath at the break, the Gabonese was able to offer himself an equalizing ball after returning from the locker room, but his dive ball escaped the Spanish frame. In the process, Sorloth, on the edge of offside, did not miss the opportunity (2-0, 54e). And Marseille therefore completely lost track.

In the money time, Mosquera set the stadium ablaze by finding the fault in his turn after a corner (3-0, 86e) – a catastrophe for an OM placed on the back foot and then unable to react. After two saving parades from Lopez, Jean-Louis Gasset’s men – admittedly beaten for the first time after five victories in a row since taking office – finally turned on the light by striking through Clauss, on an offering from Aubameyang (3 -1.90e+4).

The Olympians will play well in the quarter-finals of the Europa League. Tune in this Friday at 1 p.m. to find out their next European opponent.
