The picture is complete. After Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Manchester City, two new teams punched their ticket for the quarter-finals of the prestigious Champions League this Tuesday evening: FC Barcelona and Arsenal. Cited by the bookmakers as the favorites for today’s confrontations, these two clubs have experienced varying fortunes.

Barça does the job

After their frustrating draw in Naples three weeks ago, Barça played a large part of their end of the season, at the Camp Nou, during this second round against the Italian team. And the Blaugrana held their place by signing a precious victory (3-1).

The light came from Fermin Lopez, author of a victorious recovery after good work from Raphinha (1-0, 15th). The former Rennais then saw his shot pushed back by the post, but Joao Cancelo, an opportunist, did not miss the opportunity to double the lead (2-0, 17th). Rrahmani’s reduction in the score after half an hour of play reignited the suspense somewhat (2-1, 30th), but Lewandowski finally sealed Barcelona’s qualification after a nice move at the end of the match (3- 1, 83e).

Arsenal got scared

For its part, Arsenal was therefore expected to turn the corner after a very disappointing performance logically concluded with a setback at Porto (0-1). The Gunners, who are riding a sparkling dynamic on a national scale, experienced another very stressful evening. Trossard put the two teams back on level terms throughout the double-header by creating a perfect sequence following a laser pass from Odegaard just before half-time (1-0, 41st).

The second act was more tight, as were the overtime periods. The matter was settled on penalties. And in this little game, it was Arsenal who had the last word after two failed attempts in the Portuguese ranks. The London club is going through the back door.
