Marcelino will remember his return to the Stade Vélodrome for a very long time. This Thursday, during the round of 16 first leg of the Europa League, Villarreal was defeated by Olympique de Marseille with a score of 4 goals to 0.

A failed return to the pitch of his former club, he who left OM at the start of the season. Jean-Louis’ men therefore take a considerable option in qualifying for the quarter-finals. The return match will take place on March 14.

After the match, at a press conference, the Spanish technician did not hide his disappointment after this heavy defeat. The 58-year-old coach believes he is the only one guilty of this debacle.

“We started the match well, especially in attack. We even created more danger than Marseille until the first goal. It’s this first goal that hurts us a lot, the second even more. I’m the only one guilty, I didn’t make the right decisions before and during the match,” he admitted.

OM has changed its face

How far Olympique de Marseille is in agony. Since the arrival of Jean-Louis Gasset at the head of the team, the Marseille club has come back to life and is on a good dynamic. The Phocéens impress on the field and are on a series of 4 consecutive victories in all competitions.

The Olympians want to continue their momentum and confirm once again this weekend in Ligue 1 on home soil against FC Nantes as part of the 25th day. A success would allow them to clearly return to the match for European places at the end of the season.
