Real Sociedad had a frustrating evening at the Reale Arena on Tuesday, as they were eliminated from this season’s Champions League after a 4-1 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16.
Mikel Merino gave the public a great moment by scoring a consolation goal at the end of the match. The 27-year-old midfielder had an eventful end to the match, as he spoke several times with referee Michael Oliver.
According to Relevo, Merino revealed that Oliver asked him if he wanted injury time extended at the end of the match.
A strange discussion with the referee
“We deserved a goal. We did some very good things, turning around the opposing goal. The referee himself asked me: “Do you want us to add more or not?” » and I replied that we still wanted to add more here. »
Oliver and Merino also chatted after the final whistle. The referee, known in England for being a Newcastle United fan, reportedly asked Merino if he was ready to join the Premier League club, for whom he played between 2017 and 2018. An attempt at flirting that was not not gone unnoticed. For Merino and Real Sociedad, the only goal now is La Liga. It is imperative that they return to form in the coming weeks if they are to return to Europe next season.
