Domenico Berardi, the right winger of Italy, European champion in 2021, was seriously injured on Sunday with Sassuolo. The Nazionale will have to do without the 29-year-old striker for Euro 2024 in Germany.

Penultimate in Serie A, Sassuolo is living a terrible nightmare. The Neroverdi recorded their 17th defeat in 27 days at Hellas Verona (1-0) on Sunday, but they also lost their star player and top scorer Domenico Berardi. The 29-year-old striker injured his Achilles tendon and a probable rupture will cause him to miss several months of competition, including Euro 2024.

Berardi is one of the offensive leaders of the Nazionale now led by Luciano Spalletti, after coming to light on the right wing of the Azzurri during the Euro won against England (on penalties at Wembley ) in July 2021. He finished the qualifiers with two goals and an assist during a difficult campaign concluded with a second place ahead of Ukraine in direct confrontations.

Immobile discarded

The Italians are in total uncertainty, particularly in the offensive sector, a few months before the competition in Germany. Federico Chiesa, Matteo Politano, Riccardo Orsolini, Mattia Zaccagni or Stephan El Shaarawy can occupy the wings of the 4-3-3. No center forward earned their place after Ciro Immobile was sidelined. Gianluca Scamacca and Giacomo Raspadori, substitutes at their club in Serie A, were started last fall.

Spaletti will try to see a little more clearly regarding his group during the next international window, with preparation matches against Venezuela and Ecuador, in three weeks in the United States. The transalpine selection will have a lot to do in its Euro group with matches against Albania, Spain and Croatia.
