The French goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris, did not like the mentality that reigned at Tottenham in recent years.
Former Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris has opened up about the problems faced by his former manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Lloris, who now plays for LAFC, reached the Champions League final under the current Chelsea manager. “Under Pochettino, you could see the progression year after year, and we were very competitive,” he told The Athletic. “We were close to victory. I think at the time we were missing two or three more players to claim success and win trophies. Our progress was too fast for the club because, at the time, they were focusing on the new stadium. He did not have the financial reserve he has today. At the time, we needed to add some players and regenerate that group of players.”
Lloris wanted a trophy with Spurs
He added : “When I felt we were most likely to win a trophy, we had to move to Wembley. The year before, at White Hart Lane, we finished undefeated. We won 17 matches and drew two; it was a great record. At the time we thought if we stayed at White Hart Lane we could achieve the same number of points, but we moved to Wembley – a different environment and stadium. We had to deal with this situation for a year and a half. Despite this, we managed to get into the top four.”
In the end, Lloris will have left Tottenham without having been able to win a single trophy in the space of 12 years. Today, he plays for the American team Los Angeles FC. In California, he will perhaps have a better chance of being able to add a line to his record.
