The 1991 Ballon d’Or dreamed of becoming coach of the OM first team. He will remain on the reserve bench.

Following the catastrophic performance of Olympique de Marseille against Stade Brestois (1-0 defeat while being in numerical superiority), Gattuso did not survive. The Italian technician is no longer the coach of the Marseille club, replaced at short notice by Jean-Louis Gasset.

According to information from the regional daily Provence this Tuesday, Jean-Pierre Papin would have wanted to recover this position. The 1991 Ballon d’Or saw himself as the ideal candidate to take over from the former AC Milan midfielder.

Papin coach of OM, still not…

At the end of last November, a little over a year after his return as OM ambassador, Jean-Pierre Papin was named coach of the reserve team in place of Fabrice Vandeputte. “With a view to continuing and strengthening, a little further, the policy undertaken by the management of Olympique de Marseille in terms of training and supporting its young talents towards the professional world, Jean-Pierre Papin is appointed reserve team coach »could we read in a press release from the Olympian club published on November 30, 2023.

Provence specifies that the former scorer for OM and the French team already wanted to take over from Marcelino, who resigned last September. As a coach, “JPP” never really convinced, he was notably fired by RC Lens at the end of the 2007-2008 financial year.
