What if the PSG coach returned to the FC Barcelona bench? This is a hypothesis raised in Spain for the succession of Xavi.

On January 27, Xavi announced, to everyone’s surprise, that he was going to leave his position as coach of FC Barcelona next June, while his contract runs until 2025. Since that date, several names of potential successors have been announced. been considered by the Spanish media. Among these, Hans-Dieter Flick, Mikel Arteta, Roberto De Zerbi, and even Xabi Alonso.

This Friday, Mundo Deportivo adds a prestigious name to this list. That of Luis Enrique, the current coach of Paris Saint-Germain. A good part of the Blaugrana squad would also be favorable to this idea, in particular the first two captains: Sergi Roberto and goalkeeper Marc-André Ter Stegen.

Major obstacles

However, two obstacles stand in the way of achieving such a return. The 53-year-old technician is currently linked to PSG until June and he is renowned for keeping his commitments. On the other hand, Barcelona’s finances remain quite opaque.

In the past, Luis Enrique coached Barça between 2014 and 2017. “It’s a well-considered, carefully considered decision. The reason is the way I experience this profession. For me, this means very few hours of rest and disconnection”, he justified at the time to announce his departure. In his first season on the Catalan bench, he won a historic Liga-Cup-Champions League treble.
