FC Rouen created the biggest surprise of the round of 16 of the Coupe de France by eliminating AS Monaco (1-1, 6-5 tab) Thursday evening in an electric atmosphere.

The knockout stages of the Coupe de France therefore saved their biggest surprise for last. FC Rouen, resident of National, eliminated AS Monaco (1-1, 6-5 tab), to sign a real feat.

ASM had nevertheless negotiated the start of the match well, with a penalty obtained and transformed by Folarin Balogun (0-1, 35th). But the Normans took advantage of the apathy of the Monegasque defense to equalize on an indirect free kick, where Clement Bassin found the fault (1-1, 45th + 3).

Monaco, the season is going badly

In the second half, Monaco did not really react, nor knew how to prove themselves superior to their opponent. It was even Rouen who had the best ball of 2-1, in vain (56th). During the penalty shootout, if the first miss was for the Rouennais, goalkeeper Leonard Aggoune turned into a hero, this time repelling Balogun’s attempt, then that of Maghnes Akliouche.

After eliminating Toulouse in the previous round, Rouen thus offers itself a new feat, and will welcome Valenciennes (Ligue 2) in the quarter-finals, with dreams of the last four. For Monaco, this season which had started so promisingly is going badly. With a series of three matches without a victory in Ligue 1, the Adi Hutter team left the qualifying places for the Champions League. She now says goodbye to the Coupe de France.
