Real Madrid has lost one of its most emblematic goalkeepers. Miguel Angel died this Tuesday. He was 76 years old.
Sad day for Real Madrid who learned this Tuesday of the disappearance of Miguel Angel, a player who marked the history of the Spanish club. After a season spent at Atlético Ourense, Miguel Angel arrived at Real Madrid in 1967. He did not leave until twenty years later (nineteen years to be exact), in 1986. Enough to make him one of the most important goalkeepers in the history of the Merengue club, he who will have played 346 matches in the jersey of the Casa Blanca. He had one of the finest records of a Madrid player.
Considered a Real legend, Miguel Angel Gonzalez won seven Spanish championships with his team, but also three Spanish Cups, two UEFA Cups and a League Cup. His particularly agile and feline player profile earned him the nickname El Gato (the cat). He made his real debut with Real during the 1969-1970 season, on November 23 to be exact. Not having the confidence of the coach at the time (Miguel Muñoz), he took his trouble patiently. The arrival of Molowny on the bench will be a game-changer for him.
A legendary parade
His rise in power in front of the Madrid cage will allow him to experience the joys of the selection. A Spanish international on eighteen occasions, he notably played three matches, during the 1978 World Cup organized in Argentina. His successful save during the match against Austria is still considered one of the most spectacular ever made in the competition.
After his football career ended, Miguel Angel remained at Real Madrid and was appointed goalkeeping coach. He then remained in the mysteries of the Spanish club. The announcement of his death at the age of 76 plunged Real Madrid into sadness.
