Will Aliou Cissé still be the coach of Senegal at the end of the CAN?
Title holders, Senegal were eliminated from the African Cup of Nations last Monday, being knocked out by the organizing country, Ivory Coast (1-1, 4-5 tab). This early elimination leads to questions about Cissé’s future at the head of the Lions of Teranga.
Asked about this, the former defender was evasive. “We’ll see what the future holds.” First I want to digest this defeat, because everyone is disappointed. There will surely be discussions with the federation, but my future doesn’t matter for the moment”replied the Senegal coach, in a post-match press conference.
Not having a short memory
For his part, Mamadou Niang wanted to defend Cissé’s record. “Let us not forget the moments of joy he brought us either. He still took us to the final twice. He made us win this competition, which was the first for Senegal. So, you must not be ungrateful”recalls the former Olympique de Marseille striker.
Since his appointment as Senegal coach in March 2015, Aliou Cissé has accumulated 60 victories, 20 draws and 12 defeats. In December 2022, after reaching the round of 16 of the World Cup in Qatar, he was confirmed in his position until the end of CAN 2024.
