After the elimination of Senegal in the African Cup of Nations, coach Aliou Cissé could be threatened.

Senegal, defending champion, was eliminated in the round of 16 of the 2023 African Cup of Nations on Monday by Ivory Coast (1-1, 5-4 tab). An unexpected defeat which could cost coach Aliou Cissé his job.

Indeed, the elimination of the Lions of Téranga at this stage of the competition is a major setback for the Senegalese technician. The 2021 African champion was considered one of the favorites for the tournament and his defeat came as a surprise to many.

The Senegalese dominated the match for a large part of the match, but conceded the equalizer late in the match. In overtime, the two teams were unable to decide between themselves, and the match was therefore decided on penalties.

At a press conference, the 47-year-old coach admitted that his team had not met his expectations. “The only regret I have is that we stopped playing after opening the score,” he confided.

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has not yet made a decision on Aliou Cissé’s future, but it is possible that he could be called into question following this failure.

The future of Aliou Cissé at the head of Senegal is therefore uncertain. The FSF will have to determine if he is the right choice to guide the country to the 2026 World Cup.

As a reminder, the former PSG player took the reins of the Senegalese team in 2015, winning the 2022 CAN and qualifying the country for the 2022 World Cup.
