Second major surprise at the African Cup of Nations: after Senegal, it was Morocco which took the door, eliminated by South Africa in the round of 16 (0-2), Tuesday evening in Côte d ‘Ivory.

This African Cup of Nations is becoming quite unreal. The day after the elimination of Senegal, the title holder, against Ivory Coast, the host country, it was Morocco, semi-finalist of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which took the door from the round of 16. The Atlas Lions were beaten by South Africa (0-2) Tuesday evening in San-Pédro.

Walid Regragui’s men, although quite ambitious in the game, could have largely avoided such a disappointment to challenge Cape Verde. But no. They were unable to convert their opportunities and Bafana Bafana opened the scoring on the hour mark, Evidence Makgopa escaping to beat Yassine Bounou (57th).

Hakimi on the bar!

The Moroccans did not manage to equalize with a crazy match: the Lions benefited from a penalty after a strike from Ayoub El Kaabi blocked by Mothobi Mvala with his arm, but Achraf Hakimi found the crossbar. (84th) In added time, Sofyan Amrabat was sent off (92nd) and Teboho Mokoena scored a superb free kick (95th). Amazing !
