In search of a new coach after the resignation of Djamel Belmadi, the Algerian Football Federation is indeed thinking of Hervé Renard, currently at the head of the Bleues.
Algeria is in mourning. Consequence of the shameful defeat conceded by the Fennecs on Tuesday against Mauritania (1-0) with elimination from the group stage of the African Cup of Nations. It inevitably floats like an air of déjà vu, two years after the fiasco of the previous CAN and the non-qualification of Djamel Belmadi’s troops for the World Cup in Qatar.
This time, the Algerian coach preferred to say stop. Unsurprisingly, the former midfielder announced his resignation the day after the shameful match against Mauritania. His position had in any case become untenable and Walid Sadi, the president of the Algerian Federation, with whom Djamel Belmadi had conflicting relations, did nothing to retain his coach.
A temporary worker appointed until this summer?
The new boss of Algerian football, who arrived last September, would already have several names in mind to succeed him. And to believe The Team, Walid Sadi’s priority target would indeed be Hervé Renard, whose name has been mentioned since Tuesday evening. But the task will not be easy for those responsible for the Algerian federation. Because the one who won the CAN twice, with Zambia (2012) and Ivory Coast (2015), and is therefore seen as a white wizard in Africa, is at the head of the French women’s team with the goal of winning a medal at the Olympic Games which will be held in Paris next summer.
“ I am under contract with the French Federation until next August,” he also told El-Bilal, an Algerian media outlet. According to TSA, the leaders of the Federation could nevertheless be tempted to appoint an interim coach in order to be able to return to the charge at the end of the summer.
