This January 23 marks the fourth anniversary of the end of Yoann Gourcuff’s career. Undermined by injuries, the French international decided to leave Dijon in the heart of winter. A divorce synonymous with retirement for the Breton.
Six months and then gone. Yoann Gourcuff’s last adventure ended short. Landing in Dijon in the summer of 2018, the Breton left the DFCO in the winter. While he hoped to relaunch his career there, the former Lyonnais was once again undermined by injuries in Burgundy. In the end, the native of Ploemeur had to settle for 135 minutes of play for eight appearances and no starts.
There will therefore have been no miracle for the French international (31 caps). As in Lyon or Rennes, he will have been let go by his body and it is by mutual agreement that Yoann Gourcuff decided to end their collaboration. “ At the end of the first six months of this Dijon experience, Yoann Gourcuff and the DFCO chose not to continue it until the end of the contract. “, indicated the club in a press release.
The future of the Morbihan playmaker was then written in dotted lines, the companion of Karine Ferri seeming incapable of getting out of his spiral of injuries. Without ever announcing it, Yoann Gourcuff actually announced his retirement. A small death that the person concerned experienced very well. “I immediately switched to a new organization with my family. I experienced the end of my career very well. I’m back to who I am, I’m in control. Leaving the world of football did me a lot of good”he explained last winter, evoking requests from the amateur world which “did not succeed”.
In addition to devoting himself to his family, Yoann Gourcuff devoted himself to his new passion: tennis. “I do tournaments in the area from time to time, I try to train once a week. I go mountain biking, sometimes with my father”, he added, not closing the door to a return to the world of football: “If I had to do something, it would be related to football or tennis anyway. But for the moment, the priority is completely my family.
