Failing to have resolved the question of his future, Raphaël Varane made an investment in tech.

Two weeks before the transfer market closes, the future of Raphaël Varane is still uncertain. While he seemed close to leaving Manchester United at the start of the winter, a state reduced to a minimum by Erik ten Hag, the French defender returned to favor in the eyes of his coach as evidenced by his tenure during the shock against Tottenham (2-2) last weekend.

The former Lensois could therefore wait until next summer before considering a departure. The 2018 world champion, on the other hand, was quicker to get involved alongside Footbar, a French start-up specializing in the collection of performance data using a sensor placed on the calf of footballers. The central defender is indeed among the new investors alongside Stéphane Martin, former president of the Girondins de Bordeaux (2017-2018) and current general director of Footbar, founded in 2014.

Raphaël Varane is not the only big name in football to have been seduced by the Footbar project, which raised no less than €3.1 million for its development thanks to this round of funding. OL player Selma Bacha, Alpine driver Pierre Gasly, Galatasaray striker Cédric Bakambu, former president of the LFP (2016-2020) Nathalie Boy de La Tour also participated in this fundraising.

“The commitment of Raphaël Varane marks a crucial step for Footbar. His influence and rich experience will strengthen our company, consolidating our position as a global leader in connected products in football,” rejoiced Stéphane Martin while the Mancunian underlined his “passion for innovation in sport”.
