Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has revealed why Lionel Messi was not allowed to parade at the Parc des Princes for the World Cup.
Messi won the World Cup with Argentina in 2022, but was not allowed to parade the trophy onto the pitch at the Parc des Princes after returning to France, apparently for fear of a backlash from the from the supporters. Of course, Argentina beat the Blues in the final and Al-Khelaifi has now revealed he couldn’t allow Messi to celebrate at the Parc des Princes because his PSG teammate Kylian Mbappé was in the losing camp .
In an interview with RMC TV, Al-Khelaifi said: “ For me, like I said, if anyone talks about the fact that we didn’t celebrate him enough after he won the World Cup, we’re in France and he won against Kylian. We are a French club. I don’t want the whole stadium to be against him either. I think we have to respect that.”
Messi’s stay in the French capital ended on a bitter note, as he was booed by fans before leaving for Inter Miami, and he admitted he had caused a “rift” among the PSG fans. However, Al-Khelaifi says World Cup winner does not ‘respect’ clubb, insisting that he shouldn’t talk about it after he leaves.
