Zidane in mourning

Zinédine Zidane, if he did not grow up with the exploits of Franz Beckenbauer, paid a beautiful tribute to the German legend, two days after the death of the Kaizer at the age of 78.

Der Kaiser, forever. RIP Mr Beckenbauer », soberly wrote Zinédine Zidane on Instagram, accompanying his tribute with a photo of the German football legend lifting the World Cup after the coronation in 1974 (2-1 against Johan Cruyff’s Netherlands). Franz Beckenbauer died last Sunday after a long illness, at the age of 78.

Born in 1972, “Zizou” did not grow up with the exploits of the double Ballon d’Or (1972 and 1976), who revolutionized football in his time by becoming a very remote playmaker (he is described as the very first libero of history). The native of Munich ended his international career in 1977.

But Zidane fully knew Beckenbauer, coach of the Mannschaft (finalist in 86 against Diego Maradona’s Argentina, world champion in 90 against the Albiceleste), short-lived coach of his favorite OM (from September 90 to January 91) and above all coach of Bayern (who beat Zidane’s Bordeaux in the 96 UEFA Cup final).
