A little over a year after Tite’s resignation, Brazil has finally appointed a permanent coach, Dorival Junior.

The move comes after Carlo Ancelotti decided to renew his contract with Real Madrid until 2026. The president of the Brazilian Football Confederation, Ednaldo Rodrigues, said last summer that Ancelotti would be the coach of the team in 2024, for the Copa América. The Brazilians have appointed Fernando Diniz as interim coach, but as Ancelotti has remained coy on the matter, speculation over him remaining at Real Madrid has grown.

Rodrigues was later removed from office after a judge found voting irregularities in his election. An injunction has since reinstated Rodrigues in his role for the time being, according to Relevo, but it was during this chaos that Ancelotti signed on with Real Madrid via a new lease.

Today, Diniz was fired and Dorival, 61, was appointed. After an exclusively Brazilian coaching career, which spanned 22 years and 20 different clubs, he will take charge of the Selecao. He notably won three Copas do Brasil and a Copa Libertadores with Flamengo in 2022. Ancelotti was expected to be the first foreign coach in the history of the Selecao, but Rodrigues chose to continue the history of the Brazilians at the head of the ‘team.
