Didier Deschamps is now the only man to have won the Football World Cup as a player and then coach

Former German international and legendary defender, Franz Beckenbauer died this Sunday at the age of 78. World champion as a player and coach, the former Bayern Munich star also coached Olympique de Marseille in France.

But the death of the “Kaiser” also means that in 72 hours, Didier Deschamps finds himself the only man to have won the Football World Cup as a player and then coach. The Brazilian Mario Zagallo, then the German Franz Beckenbauer both died within a very short period of time.

As a reminder, Zagallo, former Brazilian international and coach of the Seleçao, died Friday January 5 at the age of 92. He was the first to win the World Cup as a player and then a coach. Didier Deschamps is therefore the last man to have achieved such a feat to still be alive. Does the curse now hang over DD? The French coach will have to pay close attention to him in the coming days. We never know…
