The year 2024 resumed this Tuesday in La Liga and after several interesting matches including the victory of Real Madrid earlier today against Mallorca (1-0), we were entitled this Wednesday evening to a clash between Girona (2nd) and Atlético de Madrid (3rd). At home, the Catalans were organized in 4-5-1 with their traditional defense made up of Yan Couto, Eric Garcia, Daley Blind and Miguel Gutierrez. In front, Artem Dovbyk was supported by Savio and Pablo Torre. For Atlético de Madrid, Diego Simeone chose a 3-5-2 with Samuel Lino and Rodrigo Riquelme in the corridor. Marcos Llorente, Koke and Rodrigo De Paul found themselves in the middle behind Alvaro Morata and Antoine Griezmann.

And this match got off to a flying start under the leadership of Girona. Perfectly served in the opposing area, Artem Dovbyk crossed his shot too far on the right which grazed the post (1st). It was only a postponement since in the process Pablo Torre threw Valery Fernandez deep. The latter hooked in front of the Axel Witsel area to finish with a curling shot (1-0, 2nd). Quickly punished, Atlético de Madrid did not tense up and tried to react. Mario Hermoso tested Paulo Gazzaniga (8th) before Antoine Griezmann – with a deflection of the head – found Alvaro Morata on the right of the area. The latter then adjusted the goalkeeper with a cross shot landing on the left of the goal. Initially refused, the goal was finally validated by video refereeing (1-1, 14th). Enough to announce a crazy evening.

Alvaro Morata walked on water, but Girona won

Staying well in their match, Girona insisted and Ivan Martin stole the ball from Koke in front of the opposing area and put Jan Oblak in evidence. Savio followed well and was going to hit towards the wide open goal to conclude (2-1, 26th). Like a boxing match, Atlético de Madrid tried to respond with a point-blank strike from Antoine Griezmann which was repelled by Paulo Gazzaniga (33rd) then Yan Couto responded for Girona with a heavy strike (38th). Michel’s players even managed to get away following a two-played corner on the left. At the near post, Artem Dovbyk extended towards the second where Daley Blind would score (3-1, 39th). Affected, Atlético de Madrid was not stunned. With a breakthrough, Alvaro Morata would put his team back on track before the break (3-2, 44th).

In the process, the Spanish striker even found the fault again, but this time he was offside (45th +1). A warning at the break for Girona who failed to take it into account. Returning from the locker room, the Colchoneros left strong and Antoine Griezmann (50th) then Marcos Llorente (51st) set the tone. Finally, Rodrigo De Paul allowed Alvaro Morata to equalize and score a nice hat-trick (3-3, 54th). Less well, Girona had difficulty being dangerous. Apart from a strike from Artem Dovbyk (62nd) and an attempt from Yan Couto, Atlético de Madrid were better and finished strong. However, the Madrid club was unable to find the fault against a resilient team. And Girona began to dream. Having just entered the game, Portu overflowed on the left and found Ivan Martin in front of the box full axis. The latter would conclude with a missile lodged in the right window. With this 4-3 victory, Girona joins Real Madrid at the top of La Liga. Above all, Michel’s men relegate Atlético de Madrid and FC Barcelona (one match less) ten lengths.
