FC Barcelona were mocked for one of their social media posts on New Year’s Day, as they tried to appropriate Ilkay Gundogan’s happiness.
Ilkay Gundogan posted on Instagram that it was the best year of his life, reflecting on a year in which he won the treble with Manchester City as captain, including his first Champions League. The German international also had a child with his partner Sara, before signing for Barcelona.
Barcelona are undoubtedly one of the cringiest teams on all of social media. This is so beyond stupid. https://t.co/XLhqi4IMlX

Many were quick to notice that the Barcelona part of his year was significantly less successful than the city part. The idea is that Barcelona are trying to take credit for his happiness, despite having had a difficult start to life at the club. He was particularly frustrated by the stifling media pressure weighing on the club.
That said, Gundogan himself mentioned signing for Barcelona and a photo of himself with Joan Laporta in the original post. It usually doesn’t take much to attract ridicule online, especially on Twitter. However, there is no doubt that this initiative was perceived as a little too ambitious.
