Prosecuted for having relayed on social networks a video of a preacher calling for “a black day for the Jews”, Youcef Atal was sentenced to an eight-month suspended prison sentence, for provoking racial hatred.
A few days after the start of the conflict between Israel and Hamas, Youcef Atal relayed on social networks a video of a preacher calling for “ a dark day for the Jews ». Suspended as a precautionary measure initially by his club OGC Nice, before being given a seven-match suspension by the Professional Football League, the Algerian international was then placed in police custody for “ incitement to racial hatred » before being indicted. Returned to the Nice public prosecutor’s office, Youcef Atal was sentenced on Wednesday to eight months in prison, suspended.
During his indictment, the public prosecutor requested a ten-month suspended prison sentence and a fine of 45,000 euros. If it was followed by the court regarding the amount of this fine, it therefore saw the judge issue a lesser sentence on suspended detention. At the same time, the twenty-seven-year-old footballer will have to publish, using his own funds, the news of this conviction in the daily newspaper Nice morningas well as in The world.
Absent during the judgment
Youcef Atal was not present in court to hear his judgment, he who is currently with an Algerian selection in full preparation for the Nations Cup and whose first match is scheduled for January 15 against Angola.
