The year 2024 begins with a great tussle in the Premier League, pitting Liverpool against Newcastle.

An opposition between two teams from the north of England is on the menu for the 2024 New Year of the Premier League. Liverpool welcome Newcastle United to Anfield on Monday.

Liverpool are on the rise

The Reds are on course to start January top of the table thanks to their 2-0 win over Burnley on Boxing Day, while the Magpies were humiliated 3-1 at home by Nottingham Forest in their last outing .

Klopp’s team was unable to defeat Arsenal (1-1) during the Christmas Eve clash. A misstep which could have caused great regrets, but the Mersey team then reacted well by winning at Turf Moor. A victory which, combined with Arsenal’s poor performance against Fulham, propelled them to the top of the Premier League.

Liverpool therefore comes to this confrontation with the wind in their sails. Plus, this season they’ve been pretty impressive at Anfield. Before the two recent draws against Manchester United and Arsenal, they had plenty of points in front of their supporters.

Note also that the Reds do rather well when they perform on New Year’s Day at Anfield. In the Premier League, they have not suffered a home defeat on this date since 2005 (against Chelsea). Since then, they have won 4 times and drawn one game. Not a very reassuring statistic for Newcastle.

The probable line-ups of Liverpool – Newcastle

Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Gomez; Szoboszlai, Endo, Gravenberch; Salah, Gakpo, Nunez.

Newcastle United: Dubravka; Trippier, Schar, Botman, Burn; Joelinton, Guimaraes, Miley; Almiron, Isak, Gordon.
