It’s a hell of a page turning for Hugo Lloris and Tottenham even if we could have written it in advance. After 11 and a half years of collaboration and 447 matches, the former captain and the London club will take different paths. As announced a few days ago, the goalkeeper is in advanced negotiations with Los Angeles FC and has even reached an agreement. The transfer is now official, Lloris joins MLS immediately and will not fulfill his last six months of contract at Spurs.

“The Los Angeles Football Club announced today that the club has signed legendary French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to a guaranteed contract through 2024 with options for 2025 and 2026. Lloris will take up an international roster spot upon receipt of his P1 visa and its international transfer certificate” specifies the press release today. With the Californian franchise, the 37-year-old goalkeeper must commit for one season, plus an additional second as an option.

Los Angeles FC, one of the best franchises in MLS

In the United States, the former Niçois and Lyonnais will probably open the last chapter of a very rich career. Although he has not played since April and his current physical situation is unknown, he is joining one of the most successful teams in the American league. LAFC was indeed crowned Major League Soccer champion in 2022 and came close to the double in 2023, losing to Columbus Crew in the final on December 9. Lloris will therefore always be subject to the high level requirements: “Hugo is arguably the most successful goalkeeper of his generation and a proven winner. We are extremely pleased that Hugo has chosen LAFC for the next phase of his illustrious career”said John Thorrington, co-chairman and general manager of LAFC

The most capped French international in history (145 caps) will have to regain his level, he who must be a little uncertain after so much time without playing. At Tottenham, the world champion’s situation was becoming untenable. Left out of the group since the arrival on the bench of Ange Postecoglou, Lloris quickly made up his mind in the face of the good performances of Guglielmo Vicario, the new number one in goal for Spurs. After Harry Kane, who left this summer, a new historical figure is leaving the London club.
