The Italian Football Federation has made a drastic decision regarding Italian clubs.

The Italian Football Federation is hitting hard. According to the Italian press, the FIGC has made a decision which risks complicating the lives of Italian clubs considering participation in the Super League, a new private European competition which is the subject of controversy.

Indeed, from the 2024-25 season, Italian teams will have to obtain a license from the FIGC to participate in Serie A. This license will be refused to clubs which participate in a competition organized by another body than FIFA, the UEFA or the FIGC itself. This decision, which goes against the Super League project, means that the transalpine teams which join this competition would be excluded from the Italian championship.

The FIGC’s decision could have a significant impact on the European Football Super League project. Italian clubs, which are among the most important in Europe, could be forced to choose between participation in this new continental competition and their future in Serie A.

As a reminder, in April 2021, the first version of the Super League included three Italian teams: AC Milan, Juventus Turin and Inter Milan. Faced with strong opposition, the Milanese clubs withdrew from the project, while the Old Lady opted for a separation from Real Madrid and Barça – the main promoters – in July 2023, following negotiations with UEFA .
