Reeal Madrid: things will move in January

Real Madrid will find something to occupy themselves during the January transfer market.

Real Madrid are strategizing to tackle their central defense injury crisis, after starters David Alaba and Eder Militao both tore their anterior cruciate ligaments. While several names have been mentioned, it seems that the path forward is already mapped out.

With only Antonio Rudiger and Nacho Fernandez in central defense until Militao returns (expected for February-March), Real Madrid will take care of this position during the January transfer market, according to El Chiringuito. The objective is to bring in a short-term option in the form of loan until the end of the season, probably with a more experienced profile.

Rudiger has played more minutes than any other Real Madrid player in 2023, and he is 30 years old. Alaba is 31 and Nacho Fernandez is also 35, meaning Real Madrid are aware that their defensive core is aging, even if Militao still has some good years ahead of him. Real Madrid will therefore look on the market for a younger defender to cover the position in the future.

The names of several young centre-backs that Real Madrid have in their sights have already been revealed, although a January move seems unlikely for them. Raphaël Varane has been suggested as a potential short-term solution and is said to be Carlo Ancelotti’s preferred option. His salary and the strong competition for his signature perhaps mean Los Blancos will walk away from a deal with Manchester United.
