Atlético de Madrid have benefited from Antoine Griezmann’s form for much of 2023, with the Frenchman directing the Colchoneros’ operations.
After Diego Simeone renewed his contract with the club, Griezmann publicly stated that he would also like to discuss a renewal with the Colchoneros. But the Rojiblancos do not consider this to be an urgent matter. According to AS, Atlético could consider offering him a new lease in the coming months, but it is far from being a priority. The Colchoneros have six players out of contract at the end of the season, and sporting director Andrea Berta is concerned with these elements first, the most important being that of captain Koke Resurreccion.
Griezmann is believed to earn €7-8 million currently and has a contract until 2026. The club are aware he will be 35 when his lease ends, making them reluctant to discuss an extension . There is a good chance that Griezmann will consider leaving the club at that point, with Major League Soccer being his preferred destination.
From his point of view, Griezmann believes he deserves a raise. Not only has his performance made him the best player in La Liga over the last 12 months, but he has already suffered two pay cuts compared to his Barcelona years, significant drops at that, in order to make life easier for the club . This goes against the policy of the Rojiblancos, who renew contracts at a slower pace, in order to reduce their wage bill.
