It’s done, Chancel Mbemba abandons OM to play in the CAN. The DR Congo central defender will not be the only Olympian likely to be missed by Gennaro Gattuso.

It’s official since Wednesday. Chancel Mbemba will play in the next African Cup of Nations (January 15 – February 13), after the list of 24 Leopards unveiled by Sébastien Desabre, the coach of the Democratic Republic of Congo. And this is not good news for OM.

The 29-year-old central defender risks missing out on a Marseille team which seems to have found a certain stability and, as is very often the case in these cases, a typical team.

Chancel Mbemba is one of those who allowed Gennaro Gattuso’s team to go six Ligue 1 matches without defeat, including four consecutive victories, the first positive period of a season full of crises.

Mbemba could be imitated by his Senegalese teammates Pape Gueye, Ismaïla Sarr and Iliman Ndiaye, and the Moroccans Amine Harit and Azzedine Ounahi, expected to also play the CAN in Ivory Coast.
