Emiliano Martinez, the bad gesture

During Aston Villa’s defeat at Old Trafford against Manchester United (3-2), Tuesday evening in the Premier League, Emiliano Martinez did not come close to being sent off for a violent intervention on Marcus Rashford.

Manchester United supporters cried foul shortly before the hour mark of the Boxing Day poster between the Red Devils and Aston Villa on Tuesday evening in the Premier League. While the visitors led 2-0, thanks to John McGinn (21st) and Leander Dendoncker (26th) in the first half, Emiliano Martinez “saved” his team by bursting out of his area to clear the ball from the feet of Marcus Rashford (55th). Hit by the Argentine goalkeeper, the English striker remained on the ground.

Too far from the action, the match referee did not signal anything and, a few moments later, after viewing the images, his video assistant logically did not suggest excluding the 2022 world champion. The 31-year-old goalkeeper’s borderline intervention was not serious enough to turn it into a free kick and a red card. In this sequence, the VAR could only sanction the player with an exclusion (and not with a simple yellow).

“Dibu” Martinez then took the water by conceding a double from his young teammate in the selection Alejandro Garnacho (59th and 71st). The former Arsenal player was unable to do anything on the winning goal signed by Rasmus Hojlund (82nd). Aston Villa was once co-leader with Liverpool at the top of the Premier League, but this defeat on matchday 17 puts a stop to Unai Emery’s team. United, sixth in the standings, comes back to eight points.
