Liverpool does the job and returns to victory. After conceding a draw on the previous day on home soil against Arsenal (1-1), the Reds found their way to victory against Burnley with a score of 2 goals to 0 as part of the 19th day of the Premier League.

A valuable success on the part of Jurgen Klopp’s players which allows them to temporarily take the lead in the standings (42 points) while awaiting Arsenal’s meeting this Thursday against West Ham.

For their part, Burnley, who had given themselves a little breathing room during the previous day (2-0 victory against Fulham) fell back into their old ways with this defeat against Liverpool. Vincent Kompany’s men remain in the red zone in 19th position with 11 points on the clock.

Darwin Nunez puts the Reds on the right track from the start

The start of the match for both teams, but in particular that of the Reds, was eagerly awaited. Against Arsenal, Virgil Van Dijk’s partners were surprised at the start of the match by the Gunners on a goal from Brazilian defender Gabriel.

This time, the Scousers wanted to put in all the ingredients to get off to the best possible start this Boxing Day. From the start of the game, Darwin Nunez hits the mark and deceives James Trafford. The number 9 scores his 5 goals of the season in the league.

The Uruguayan performs a double one-two on the left side with Cody Gakpo before slipping a mischievous right-footed shot into the small net of the Burnley goalkeeper (1-0, 6th).

Confident with this opening of the score, the Merseyders will completely master this first act by having control of the ball but above all by obtaining numerous situations, but without making the break.

A lively and indecisive second act

Upon returning from the locker room, Liverpool started again on the same basis as in the first half. An offensive game, well-oiled and perfect control of the opponent on all levels.

A clear domination materialized by a goal from Harvey Eliott following a nice collective movement in the 55th minute of play before it was finally refused by the referee for an offside by Mo Salah.

A non-achievement which restarted the match and gave hope to the Burnley team who continued to be dangerous and to shake up the Reds’ defense. But the Liverpool rearguard managed to turn around to maintain their lead on the scoreboard.

Finally in the match, Diogo Jota, who came on in place of Darwin Nunez at the end of the match (84th), ended the suspense by being at the conclusion of a lethal counterattack from his team. The Portuguese, with a left-footed strike in the area, left the opposing goalkeeper no chance (2-0, 90th). Next meeting, January 1 for Liverpool at Anfield against Newcastle.
