The Premier League’s Boxing Day poster kept all its promises: led 2-0 by Aston Villa at Old Trafford, Manchester United ended up winning thanks in particular to a double from Alejandro Garnacho (3-2), Tuesday evening.

Erik ten Hag is in the hot seat at Manchester United and his fate seemed sealed at half-time of Tuesday night’s game. Aston Villa led 2-0 at Old Trafford during the Premier League’s Boxing Day showdown. John McGinn opened the scoring with an off-centre free kick which surprised André Onana and which may have been touched by Ollie Watkins (21st). Leander Dendoncker doubled the lead, released by Raphaël Varane on a delivery from Clément Lenglet (26th). The total shower!

But the Red Devils produced a fantastic second half to reverse the score to the delight of an excited Mancunian public. After a goal disallowed from Alejandro Garnacho for offside (48th), the 19-year-old Argentinian international scored a double full of opportunism (59th and 71st). The winning goal was scored by Rasmus Hojlund (82nd). Quite a symbol. The Danish striker has been waiting to unlock his PL counter for 15 matches!

With this crazy victory (3-2), Man United are still sixth in the standings but are five points behind Tottenham, the fourth, who will play at Brighton on Thursday. Unai Emery’s Villans, deprived of Boubacar Kamara in this match, were for a time co-leaders with Liverpool, but remain third, with three points less than the Reds. Arsenal have the opportunity to regain the lead on Thursday against West Ham.
