Florentino Pérez, the president of Real Madrid, welcomed the announcement of the European crown regarding the legitimacy of the Superleague.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez welcomed Thursday’s verdict by the European Court of Justice in favor of the European Super League.
UEFA has been told it cannot ban clubs from participating in a third-party competition. This means that the Super League has the right to exist. And a project is even already in the works.
For Pérez, it is “a new impetus for European football”
“Today, the Europe of freedoms has triumphed, welcomed the strong man of Casa Blanca. Real Madrid welcomes the CJEU’s decision. In the coming days we will study the sentence in depth, but there are two clear conclusions: European club football is not and will not be a monopoly and the clubs own their destination.”
For Pérez, there will be a before and after this date in the history of football and all of sport. “Today, law, reason and freedom prevail. Just like 70 years ago, when we took a step towards the creation of the European Cup. Ending a monopoly after so many decades was not going to be an easy task. I want to tell European clubs that a new era is beginning, where we can work freely.”
“We want to give new impetus to European football and make it fully compatible with national competitions, Pérez continued. We will continue to defend a modern project, based on sporting merits and which will bring economic sustainability. We will do it despite the campaigns that we have suffered and that we will suffer from today, but no one said it was easy to end the monopoly. We will arouse the enthusiasm of the supporters.”
