Moratti wanted Cantona at all costs
Moratti almost snatched Cantona from Manchester United when he was at his peak. In 1995, when the King was suspended in England, there were very advanced discussions between the two parties. They were ultimately unsuccessful.
He said on Radio TV Serie A: ” Regrets ? There are many. Often they are related to the inability to do something. Cantona, for example, would have allowed us to change dimension. Then (Andrea) Pirlo in Milan rather than coaches who I could treat more or less well depending on the case. But everything you do is for the good of the club.”
Moratti didn’t get Cantona, but he was able to enlist other important stars. “As president, we always hope to find someone who will help us win and win a lot. Above all, I was looking for players with class, then when I had Samuel (Eto’o), I understood that class was important, but when he arrived, we repaired the team.
Finally, the former strong man of the Nerazzurri spoke about the treble won in 2010. The one which fulfilled him and which allowed him to retire with the feeling of duty accomplished. “I didn’t expect it to be considered so important, but it is. We won everything in one month. Usually I won one of three, maybe the championship, first. You suffer until the end, but it was fantastic. We were well prepared by the championships of (Roberto) Mancini and (José) Mourinho. »
