Laborious winner of Alavés (1-0), Real Madrid took the lead in La Liga before the holidays.

Real Madrid therefore ends this year 2023 with a sluggish but precious success. Carlo Ancelotti’s men snatched a victory on the lawn of Alavés, a modest opponent stuck in the second part of the table. A very long result to emerge since we had to wait for stoppage time and a victorious header from Lucas Vazquez to see the Merengue break the deadlock (0-1, 90th+1).

Real does the job

The scenario of this match prevented Real from imposing its domination. Before the hour mark, the Madrilenians were reduced to ten men after the expulsion of Nacho (55th). Alavés, who had put up good opposition until then, could have benefited from this situation. But on the contrary, it was the Spanish vice-champions who seemed galvanized by this inferiority, initially resisting the rare dangerous situations of the locals, before dealing the blow at the end of the match.

Real Madrid therefore takes control of La Liga just before Christmas, because a little earlier in the evening, Girona, sensation of this first part of the season, had let two points slip away by conceding an equalizer at the end of the match on the pitch of the Betis Sevilla (1-1).
