Authorized by European justice, the Super League has already revealed its format, with 64 teams divided into three divisions, for 14 group matches for each team. The ten worst teams will be replaced each season.

Two and a half years after the scandal of the creation of the European Super League at the initiative of Real Madrid, Barça and Juventus, the Court of Justice of the European Union authorized the organization of such a competition at the expense of UEFA, this Thursday. A resounding announcement for the Superleague, which instantly revealed the format of this competitor to the Champions League (but also the Europa League and the Conference League).

Florentino Pérez, Joan Laporta and their allies have imagined a large tournament of 64 teams, with a D1 (Star League) of 16 clubs divided into two groups, a D2 (Gold League) of 16 in two groups and a D3 (Blue League) at 32 in four groups. The best teams from the Old Continent will play 14 group matches from September to April before the quarter-finals. Only the final will be played over a single match, on neutral ground, as for the current LDC.

10 new clubs per year

The Super League promises to reward sporting results and not to be a closed league. Thus, the last two of D1 will be replaced by the two finalists of D2, the same for the second division. In the third division, we will even have the 10 worst teams replaced by 10 others each year according to the championship rankings. A surprise French champion would arrive in the Super League but at the very bottom…

But who will participate in this major private competition not controlled by UEFA? The big Spanish and Italian clubs will be there, PSG is leading the charge but OM and OL would be interested in this sporting spectacle and financial jackpot. On the other hand, English football could be significantly absent, while Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal were among the founders of the Superleague in 2021.
